Ok delete these programs?

Adela

Hello, I'm trying to give my puter a throrough cleaning before backing up
with my 4gb flash drive: deleted lots of files not needed; deleted temp and
cookies; Disk cleanup; Defrag...did I miss any other maybe?

Also wanted to delete programs not needed from add/remove, but I don't know
are ok to delete?:

Active Disk
Intel RSX 3D
Microsoft compression client pack 1.0 for Windows XP
Microsoft easy assist
Microsoft user-mode driver framework feature pack 1.0
Microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistributable
MSN
Windows installer 3.1 (KB893803)
Windows installer clean up
Windows media format 11 runtime
Windows media player

Thanks ever so much for any help to make my puter a little lighter.)

Google may be your friend.

Active Disk appears to be a utility from Iomega to install applications on
flash drives. Lose it if you don't use it.

Intel RSX 3D is a utility to simulate 3D positional audio in a 2-speaker
sound system. May be interesting, but hardly essential.

I haven't studied the rest of the list, but you ought to be able to lose the
MSN browser. Does Microsoft even push that any more?

I think that you'd want to keep the rest. The C++ runtime and the installer
3.1 packages are required by some software.

Can you back up an XP system onto a 4GB flash drive? Impressive.

Just a "spring clean" , or any special reason ?

A

Adela

Yes, Jim, a VERY special reason: to speed up a little my very old puter,
and also to make it fit into my 4GB flash drive! lol! Adela

Thank you so much Bob! You're right about Google but I thought it was too
techncal for them?
Active Disk appears to be a utility from Iomega to install applications on
flash drives. Lose it if you don't use it.

I'd love to delete it since I no longer use the Iomega Disks, but if it will
affect my flash drive, where I hope to backup, then I'll keep it.
Intel RSX 3D is a utility to simulate 3D positional audio in a 2-speaker
sound system. May be interesting, but hardly essential.

Then ok to delete this one I hope? But, as you also suggested, I'll keep
the rest of them as I'm afraid to cause a puter tragedy! lol!

As to MSN, I didn't know it was a broswer as I only use IE. Before I
contacted this forum I did delete it and my OE and IE disappeared. Thinking
it was because of this, I did a system restore. I'd love to know if it
wasn't the cause so I can again try to get rid of it...

Finally, do you think I won't have enough backup space in the 4gb flash
drive for my WinXP? Even if I'm not backing up the programs, only the files
and folders, especially all 4 of my OE identities? This is one of the
reasons I was embarked on deleting as much as I could...

Thanks again! Adela

Hello philo and thank you!

Bad idea even if it's an application no longer used?
I did try to delete things I was sure I didn't need through the add/remove,
but on the items I listed, I do not know whether they are safe to delete or
not.

Thanks again. Adela

Don't depend on flash drives to store your data, they have a tendency to
fail when you need them most. If you have less than 4GB of data to archive;
burn it to DVD and make several copies.

Download Crap Cleaner to do these chores, it does them all at once.

Do not delete folders of applications that you no longer want. Uninstall
them from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Thank you Mark! I was waiting for the demise of my puter lol! before
putting more money into it, but I suppose I could buy a DVD burner that I
could also use with my future new computer you think? Meantime, perhaps I
should backup more often?

Thanks again. Adela

Yes you could buy a DVD burner now and use it in the new computer later. But
since all new computers come with a DVD burner, you then would have two.
Better to spend your money now on an external USB hard drive and imaging
software such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. The imaging software can
be used to back up your data on either computer, or both if you decide not to
get rid of the old one, onto the external drive. The software can be used to
back up just your data and/or your complete install. With a complete backup
you can restore everything including the operating system and applications
all in one step. If your hard drive fails, you lose everything. But with the
backup, you replace the failed drive with a new one, then restore the backup
image to the new drive with the software. You're up and running in an hour
instead of days and everything is just as it was. I use Acronis for this and
it works perfectly every time. Business backups probably should be done
daily, but most home users probably back up monthly, or less. I know I'm
guilty of the latter!

I believe that Active Disk is used only to run applications from a flash
drive. Getting rid of it shouldn't effect your ability to use the drive as
an ordinary storage device. (I say shouldn't, but there's a slight chance
that it'll mess things up. Ask people who have uninstalled Adaptec/Roxio CD
burning software, for example.)

I haven't tried MSN Explorer in years. I'm surprised that removing it
affected OE and IE as well. It may be best to get rid of it using the
Windows Components part of the add/remove programs control panel. According
to a Wikipedia article, MSN Explorer was bundled with XP. (I'd forgotten
that.) You may have a newer version installed. It's ancient history now,
though; Microsoft has moved in different ways in their path to (computing)
world domination.

As to backing up to a 4 GB flash drive, that sounds unreasonably optimistic.
I doubt that even a fresh XP installation, with no additional software or
data files, would fit. I don't know that from personal experience, though. I
trust that you know how to check the amount of space used by your system.
You'll also need a backup utility, as you can't copy some of the system
files using XP while it is in use. (XP includes a backup utility. It's not
installed by default in Home Premium, but it exists on the install CD. I
never used it. Lately, I've been using Acronis True Image. It's fairly easy
to use, although others may disagree.)

I'm too lazy to check the other Microsoft bits that you mentioned. I expect
that they're not too technical for Google; the Google results may be too
technical for you (or me), though.
