Office 2003 installation problem

H

Herbert Eppel

In the apparent absence of an Office 2003 newsgroup I'm not sure where
the best place is for post a question regarding an Office 2003
installation problem - any pointers?

Anyway, here is the problem:

An attempt to install Office 2003 on my laptop (via the upgrade route
from Officer 2000) using an official new Office 2003 CD results in the
following error message:

Error 1305: Setup cannot read file
E:\FILES\PFILES\COMMON\DESIGNER\MSADDNRR.DLL

Retry fails, so the only option I have is to cancel the installation,
and the system then 'rolls back' to my existing Office 2000 installation :-(

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

This is a general error "reading" from the install CD. Things to
check:

-- Clean DVD / CD lens -- Dirty lens "may" mis-read the disks
-- Check / clean Office 2003 disk - Dirty CD may force the mis-read
or the CD is damged

-- Test the Office 2003 on a different CD / DVD drive or PC. If it
work, then problem is with the original CD / DVD drive, which is
beginning to fail hardware wise.

You are also way off:

Setup cannot read file
E:\FILES\PFILES\COMMON\DESIGNER\MSADDNRR.DLL

This can be a CD / DVD drive "read" problem.

Thanks for all the replies.

I realise this is the wrong group but I just wanted to report back that
a friend recommended the troubleshooting page at
<http://www.smartcomputing.com/TECHSUPPORT/detail.aspx?guid=&ErrorID=26082>.

I'm pleased to report that Office 2003 installed OK after I had
(temporarily) set the Transfer Mode to PIO Only, as described on that page.

Actually, what happened was that the same error occurred again, but the
installation continued and completed successfully after I clicked the
Retry button.

I can't remember whether I actually tried this first time round, so I'm
not sure whether it would have worked with DMA transfer mode.

Anyway, I set the transfer mode back to DMA right away after the
installation, because with both available devices (not sure what they
are) set to PIO only the laptop had become unbearably slow.
