oem xp pro question part 2

S

Sammy Castagna

It is an oem Microsoft copy. I wrote Microsoft and ask------

I have an XP Pro pc with a main board going bad I think. It is my
understanding that if I change the main board and the cpu the oem version
that is installed will no longer be good, is this correct? My question is if
that is the case could I buy a new case main board and cpu and use the old
hard disk and other parts and buy a new license to keep from installing all
the stuff over.

The answer was---------

Hello Sammy,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Customer Service.

I understand that you wish to know whether changing the mother board of your
computer will render the copy of Windows XP useless. I realize your concern
and look forward to assisting you.

Sammy, I would like to inform you that you need not buy a new license for
Windows XP after changing the mother board. However, it may be necessary to
re-install Windows XP after replacing the mother board. After installing,
you can re-activate the Windows XP by calling the following number:
(888) 571-2048

I hope you find the above information helpful. If you have further
questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for using Microsoft Products and Services.

I guess I am not going to know until I try. I will pay again if necessary.

Sammy;
What type of OEM?
Was Windows XP furnished with your computer by a major OEM?
If so, you may not be able to install with a motherboard from a different
manufacturer.

Jupiter,
No the computer was a kit it came blank. I put win98 on it and then bought
an oem copy and replaced win98 with xp pro. Like I said if I have to pay
again it is no big deal. I want to know what to order if I can pinpoint what
is wrong with this machine. I think it is the IDE ATA controller.

Sammy;
In that case you should still be able to use the same OEM Windows XP
license.
There is still probably enough of the old left to make this OK.
There should be no additional cost for Windows.

You will most likely need to perform a Repair Installation to properly
detect the new hardware:

Sammy,
Thanks very much for the added information and please post back with your
results. It is possible the technician could have missed the oem part in the
message, but hopefully not.
Looking forward to your results.
Good luck,
