oem X over top of XP pro retail

G

Geoffw

I have just put together a system that was destined to be
supplied with no OS installed.

I installed win XP pro retail to test components and
compatibility with the intention to remove this before
delivery.

The buyer has now decided they want oem win XP (home)
installed.

Is there anyway I can install over the top of Pro or is the
only option to start from scratch

thanks

G'day Geoffw,

Have you thought about doing a low level format on the Hard Disk Drive.

I know that you used to be able to do this from the BIOS, but some of the
more modern BIOS doesn't offer this.

The other option is to install the Hard Drive into another computer and do a
full format (not a quick format) on the entire hard drive.

I hope this is helpful,

will probably just format the partition and do a new
install, I was sort of hoping to be able to leave some of
the settings intact, not neceaarily a lot of work but I
would prefer to be drinking

Low-level formats don't exist anymore. If you performed one on a modern
drive, you would ruin the drive.

These days, what people sometimes call a "low-level format" is simply
zero-filling the drive.

But it doesn't matter, because it's completely unnecessary in this
situation.

I know that you used to be able to do this from the BIOS, but some of

Also completely unnecessary. He simply needs to do a normal clean
installation, in the usual way. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the
BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for
a clean installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
