OE won't open attachments

A friend of mine occasionally gets this message when attachments come
in through OE. "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments
in your mail". I told her to go to Tool/Options/Security and uncheck
the box that prevents them from downloading but she said it is
unchecked. Is the above the same message that you get when the
security option is checked or is it different because even when
unchecked she gets this message. She uses Norton's antivirus
software.

Thanks!

Better to ask a newsgroup with OE in the title. This group is for the
XP OS. Bye bye now!

Greetings --

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
articles below:

Thanks Bruce,

But that was the first thing she did. She said she unchecked that
option but it still won't let her view the attachments. Actually, her
son has an email account on her computer and gets his mail there
sometimes. It's his incoming email that contains the attachments.
I'll check the last two links you provided but I also feel that she
shouldn't allow him to receive those attachments on her computer. I
wouldn't! Thanks for the reply. BTW, I'll try to find the OE
newsgroup and post it there. I saw so many postings about OE in here
that I thought this was OK.

It is OK, as far as I'm concerned. Outlook Express is part of
Windows, and it's perfectly fine to ask about it here.

However, it is true that your chances of getting an Outlook
Express problem solved are usually better if you ask in an
OE-specific group.

Greetings --

Perhaps a "reset" of OE is in order, then.

OE ships as part and parcel of WinXP, so your question isn't truly
out-of-place, but you might find more people who "specialize" in
solving its mysteries in a news group dedicated to OE.
