Odd Floppy error message

My friend with XP gets this error every time she tries to open a floppy:

"No ID Address Mark Found On Floppy Disk"

This Dell drive worked before and the disks worked on another computer at
her work. No recent hardware changes.

I say just replace the drive. Anyone? Thanks.

Does her work computer run Windows 95?

The problem usually arises with plder pre-formattred disks, on
non-preformatted floppies formatted on Windows 95 systems, and any other
disks that do not contain a media descriptor byte in the BIOS parameter
block (BPB) of the boot sector. Older product disks may also not have the
media descriptor byte. Windows OSs more recent than Windows 95 rerquire a
valid MDB.

To resolve the issue -if indeed that is it- the disk has to be
reformatted in a Windows 98, Mellenium, NT, 2000, XP computer. Of course,
that destroys the data so one must first copt it off. Alternately, one
can use a disk editor to write the appropriate value to the BPB of the
boot sector.

The most workable solution might be to use her work computer to copy the
files to a new, formatted floppy or other media such as a CD or flash
drive.

If the disks are unused, it might suffice just to do a full format (not a
quick format) on her home computer before writing data to the disk.
