Odd Filename Order in Filename Dialogs

Gene Wirchenko

Hello:

I posted the following about a month ago.

There was one suggestion from J. P. Gilliver to switch to switch
to Detail, set the order, and set the detail level back.
Unfortunately, this change does not stick. Does anyone have any other
ideas?

Here is the problem statement again:

I have a problem on my XP system where with some filename
dialogs, I get the files and directories in weird order. I think that
the order I am getting is from most- to least-recently-accessed though
I am not sure if it is always that.

The dialogs that do this do not have an option for setting the
order. [except for in Details as above]

I do not know how this got started, but I would like to correct
it. How?

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Are you trying to sort the files and folders in Windows Explorer/File
Manager? Also, are you saying that some titles are missing in Windows
Explorer.

If so then right-click on the title bar and select what is to be shown
and to sort by that column you just need to click on that title.

For example, I have Name, Date Modified, Type Size. Now if I want to
sort by date modified then I just click on that title and the files and
folders get sorted. Of course all folders will be grouped together. If
I want to add more titles, then I can right-click on that bar and select
new titles from the drop-down window.

Hope you get the idea.

You said some dialogs.
Is the dialog that was opened from Notepad is also affected?

I just checked this. The Save As dialog in Notepad is one of
them. I just set the order by switching to Details, selecting sort by
name, resetting to List, and then actually saving a file, but when I
tried Save As again, the order was back to the mess.

The default Windows common open/save dialog's file list sort method is by
name. This can be changed by clicking the "Apply to All Folders" button on
the "View" tab of the "Folder Options" dialog. But to get the expected
result, the "Folder Options" dialog must be opened from an Explorer window.
Note that, since we need to press the "Apply to All Folders" button, it will
affect to almost all folder paths.

Follow these steps:

1. Close all Explorer windows and all open/save file dialog.

2. Press WIN-R to open the Run dialog. Enter C:\ then press enter.

3. At the Explorer window, do not browse to any other path, or open another
Explorer window. If you did, you must restart from step #1 again. Otherwise,
the final result will be inconsistent.

4. Change the Explorer display mode and file list sorting as the default.
e.g.: List View sorted by Name.

5. Open Explorer menu: Tools -> Folder Options.

6. In "Folder Options" dialog, press the "Apply to All Folders" button on
the "View" tab.

7. Press "Yes" on confirmation dialog, then press the "OK" button on "Folder
Options" dialog.

8. Close the Explorer window.

Now check it with Notepad.

If it's still not working, the only probable cause is third-party Windows
Common Dialogs extender program.
