Occasional Hard Crashes HELP

WXP pro SP2

D-805 2,6
CORSAIR XMS2 4G DDR2 RAM

I've had two sudden hard crashes once while using Word, once while
composing an email. They were weeks apart. Screen goes black, then
Windows restarts.

I think it crashed a few other times while the computer was sitting
idle, but am not positive since the system will revert to the Window
Welcome screen if I leave it alone for a while. (Is this normal? Can I
configure it to keep me logged in regardless of activity?)

I dumbly clicked past the pop-up offering to view or send a report.
My only other suspicious issue is during POST, once or twice a week,
the system locks up. it stops after confirming RAM, just before it
lists USB devices. I have to turn off the PC form the front on/off
button, and it then starts up normally.

So either I have 2 non-Windows issues, or one Windows issue and one
'issue of unknown origin' since the POST issue occurs before Windows
starts.

Where does Windows arhive the hard crashes? or do I have to view them
right after the event? I am sure the report is something i wouldn't
understand anyway, but I could copy it down and seek expert help
translating it on this usergroup
thanks!

Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer |
Application

(Check System, too.)

If you come across a recent error, double-click on it and click on the
Copy button (upper right-hand corner below the down arrow button). Then
you will be able to paste that information in your next post.

Unless an error repeats it can be pointless spending a lot of time
troubleshooting. Whay you had was a "Blue Screen of Death" or Stop Error
which causes the System to fail and automatically restart. Disable
automatic restart on system failure. This should help by allowing time
to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on the My Computer
icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and
Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

If and when you get another occurence:
BAD_POOL_CALLER;
STOP BAD_POOL_CALLER ( 0x???????, 0x???????, 0x???????, 0x???????, ).
What appears on the line below what is above?

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms796120.aspx

BAD_POOL_CALLER2: BAD_POOL_CALLER
(A kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory
operations. Typically, a faulty driver or buggy software causes this.
Source: http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

What hardware and software changes did you make prior to the problem
first arising.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. I hope I am learning
i have three hard drives C is my system drive D is essentially empty,
and H is an external USB I use for data, and as a digital attic. I use
it to store stuff, like my daughter's hard drive when her system was
wobbly. so when i searched "quicktime" across all drives, i got 640
occurrances. but only 1 quicktime.exe on my C drive.
Think I'll delete all the other crap on D & H
attached are the screen prints after I ran sigverif.exe. please assist
me interpret this report.
As far as changes to the system which might have precipitated the
crashes; I have no idea.
I have 41 unsigned files.
i'll disable auto restart.
thanks again.

Research suggested that the Event Viewer error indicated an older and a
newer version were installed. Removing the older version resulting in
the errors ceasing.
