Obtaining XPe

Robin Imrie

Hi,

I am starting a new job in a few weeks time and have been asked by my
new employer to specify all my development tools. One of this will be
Windows Embedded Standard.

Does anyone know if Windows Embedded Standard comes with Visual Studio
Professional & MSDN Premium. I have looked at everything on the MS
website but it seems unclear if this is the case or not.

Thanks

Regardless of how you get the tools, you need to pay about $90/ea. if you
deploy systems.

I have a copy of that kicking-around but never realized it was so costly to
deploy. Just as well I didn't waste my time developing anything with it.

Seems to me you'd have to be crazy to use this when there are
freely-distributable Linux versions like BusyBox. Or, just use a minimalist
install of Debian, that's small enough for most RAM-based platforms.

Your points have been discussed many times in many forums so it's not useful
to open a new discussion. You should recognize however that there are
real-world organizations that have Windows experience and assets that they
would like to leverage. At least in that circumstance XPe makes sense. I
leave it to others to argue the issues of "total cost of development and
maintenance" which may or may not make $90 seem like a pittance.
