Obtaining XP Pro disc with SP2 integrated

Guest

Hello all,
I bought a copy of Windows XP Pro several years ago when I built my pc.
The last time I reinstalled, I became so frustrated with trying to update to
SP 2 over the network that I borrowed a XP Pro disc from a friend with SP 2
already integrated. Apparently, it was a pirated copy.
Can I obtain a XP Pro SP 2 disc from Microsoft since I have a valid
product key? What is the best way to do this so that I'm not faced with 6
hours of downloads after a fresh install? I tried using my key with the XP
Pro SP2 disc from my friend, but that didn't work.
I trying to sort this out so that I can use the windowsupdate.com site to
get security updates.

call Microsoft regional sales, you may have to pay a small fee but it will
be less costly than 6 hours and more of your time. look up the phone number
form the Microsoft website.

or get a sp2 cd from someone or download and burn one and then you can
merge the sp2 with your own copy of XP pro

Thanks for the response. Do you have any links to instructions on how to
merge my copy with the service pack?

You need to create a "slipstreamed" installation CD.

Create a Slip Stream version of Windows XP
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm

Here are some of the files you'll need to obtain in order to
follow this procedure:

Service Pack 2 can be downloaded here:

Professionals and Developers

If you don't have a broadband connection you might want to
order SP2 on CD here:

Here is a site with instructions:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp . The
merging of Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is called slipstreaming. Type that
term into Google and search then you will find many many sites with
comments/instructions plus at least one utility designed to ease the
process. DO NOT attempt to download SP2 if you are on telephone modem
service as it is huge; borrow an SP2 CD from someone or ask a
friend/neighbor/relative with a broadband connection to download it for you
and burn it to a CD.

Not without purchasing another license, no.

Why not create your own WinXP Pro SP2 installation CD? If you have one
of the pre-SP1 installation CDs, you can easily create your own
slip-streamed WinXP SP2 installation CD. For slip-streaming the service
pack and subsequent updates to WinXP:

files

SlipStreaming WinXP

I tried using my key with the XP

No, that won't work unless the two license types are identical.
Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD and/or
license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any
retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice
versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD,
and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail
product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD. Bottom
line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.
