object linking and embedding

hi, we have several computers linked over a network and on all these systems
whenever you open an excel file you get an error saying something like"object
linking and embedding...." not supported or something,and excel closes after
a while.anyone know what the matter could be?though i believe it started when
a particular excel file was opened that was copied on a floppy from another
system not on the network.
