"cannot use object linking and embedding"

The message "cannot use object linking and embedding" appears when I open an Excel file and then the message "EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows-you will need to restart the program-an error log is being created" appears. Excel then closes on its own

What do I need to do to correct this problem?
