NVidia Driver Update

Windows XP Home SP1

Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 Graphics card

On running windows update There was a video driver suggested for download

My current driver was 4.5.2.3 and was working fine, but on downloading and
allowing windows to install this latest driver 5.2.1.6. (12Mb) I had a
problem

On right clicking the mouse button and selecting

Properties / Setting / Advanced / GeForce4 MX 420 to enable me to clone my
desktop to my TV (this worked ok with driver version 4.5.2.3.) I got an
error message Catastrophic Error but no indication or information as to what
was or what caused this error. I downloaded it again and reinstalled it
with the same result

On rolling back to Driver 4.5.2.3. Everything worked OK again. I then went
onto the Nvidia driver download website and saw that there was 2 versions of
5.2.1.6. One was 12 MB (multilanguage version) and the other one 8MB was the
English only version I downloaded and installed the 8Mb English only version
installed it and it worked OK, but now on accessing windows upgrade it still
says that I need to download this 12 Mb dodgy updated driver.

MS Drivers are limited compared to NVidia's drivers. There are no features in the MS drivers which is probably what caused the error. ID Software games won't work with MD Drivers either. The Windows Update is the latest MS driver. You do not want it unless you need stability.

If you don't want to be nagged about the available drive, back at the
Windows update page you can customize yours to include the windows update
catalog. Go there and tell it not to show the available driver

The problem was 100% caused by not UNinstalling the previous NV Detonator
first.
The previous driver (4 series detonators) had an incompatability on an
overwrite install of a 5 series- there is a redundant file left over that
is not overwritten by the new ones that clashes with the NView Desktop
app..

I have just downloaded the microsoft version again and installed it on top
of the NVidia version which seems to have cured the problem also I am now
not showing the upgrade as being required in windows update
Thanks for all the replies
