Installing hardware update from Windows Update disables 2nd video

Computer runs XP Pro with Service pack 2. Dual monitors
Primary Video card = AGP ATi Visiontek Xtasy 9200 SE 128mb (had 1 digital
and 1 analog output.
Second card is PCI NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
Mainboard is ABIT TH7II RAID with a P4 and 512 RAM
System has been stable for months.

Yesterday I installed the latest Windows Security updates (KB896358,
KB890046, KB896422, KB896428, KB883939, KB893066,) That update appeared to
be successful.

I then installed the two hardware driver updates from the Windows update
site - ATI Video for Visiontec Xtasy 9200SE and also a AC97 Audio device
driver.

The problem became aparent when I rebooted after the hardware driver
updates.

The AC97 driver update disable the sound but I was able to roll back the
driver and restore it.

The problem I need help with is my second video card (the PCI NVIDIA
GeForce4 MX 4000) was disabled even though it had not received a new driver.
When I go to display properties settings I get a message that:

"The currently selected graphics display driver cannot be used. It was
written for a previous version of Windows, and is no longer compatible with
this version of windows. The system has been started using the default VGA
driver. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to get an updated driver,
or select one of the Microsoft provided drivers."

Device manager says the PCI NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 video card is "This
device is working properly." but that is plainly not the case,

In the display properties, settings the NVIDIA card shows no information
exception the Screen resolution slider shows -1 by -1 pixels.

a. there is no listing to uninstall the ATI update in software, and I have
not attempted to uninstall all of the ATI software.

b. I uninstalled and updated the NVIDIA driver and setting software without
solving the problem.

c. I also tried to use system restore, but it fails in attempts to roll
back to states prior to the Windows security updates.

d. I tried to roll back the ATI drivers, but that crashed the system on
reboot and it had to be restarted as "last good configuartion".

e. I have searched the Microsoft knowledge ata base and found
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891387 which references my error message -
but it does not apply - this is not a portable computer, no docking station,
I am not using any rotation software.

In GR <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

I don't use ATI but you can get the nVidia drivers from their site. They'll
be newer (and better) than those offered at the Microsoft site. It's almost
always a good idea to go to the manufacturer for drivers as they change them
more often than they are changed at Microsoft's site.

NVIDA After posting, I finally solved my disabled NVIDIA card by replacing
the ATI drivers Microsoft provided with new drivers for the ATI 9200 SE from
Visiontek - It turns out the hardware driver upgrades recommended by
Microsoft were creating a conflict with the NViDIA card.

I appreciate the reply from Galen. Thanks,

Just because drivers are in the Windows Update area does not mean that
Microsoft recommends them. They are there because the manufacturer has
requested that they be there. It is always best to get your driver updates
directly from the device manufacturer.

Unfortunately after updating both video cards with the latest XP drivers from
the card manufactures the system worked fine until it was shut down and
restarted. Then the same problem with the disabled NVIDIA card and the same
error message about a driver for a prior version of Windows has returned.

It is the same message as shown in Microsofts knowledge base at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891387, but it appears that just my
computer shut down and re-start causes it. There are no hardware changes and
Device Manager still says the NVIDIA card is "Working Properly". It is only
over in Display Properties Setting that the NVIDIA card is shown as messed
up.

Do you know how did Microsoft solve the problem shown in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891387 ??
