Nvidia driver component problems

I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS AGP8x card and I have created a component for the
driver using the .inf file. This is not the detonator driver, but rather
the driver that dell provided. I used the one from dell because the one
from Nvidia was in a .exe file.

Anyway, I successfully componentized the driver, however it does not install
successfully. I have looked through the entire newsgroup and some said to
include the Class Installer : Display Adapter component and I did, but still
no success.

I am pasting the section from the setupapi.log file relevant to this driver.
Hopefully some of the experts here can give me some tips. Please note that
I am not sure of why it complains about files missing because those files
are in the repository and their effective path in the Files tab is correct.

Andy, I have looked at both of the resources in the links you pasted below
several times. The problem is that I am not able to even manually install
the nvidia driver on my XPE image. Thus if it doesn't install manually,
there's no way it is going to install through FBA and PnP. The article that
you posted, the person having the problems was at least able to manually
install the driver on his XPE image. Perhaps you can help me figure out why
it doesn't manually install. It keeps saying required file missing, but i'm
pointing it to the directory where all the files exist.

Is the .inf file landing in c:\windows\inf, and the .sys file landing in
c:\windows\system32\drivers. It looks like the service file (probably the
sys file) isn't being located.

This might nt be a solution but rather a suggestion to check...

Check you "...Quadro NVS with AGP8..." component resources (in SLD file) and
look for "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" resource. It should be a resource
responsible for installing NVSvc Nvidia helper service. You setpapi.log is
compompaing about missing the service data.

the NV driver helper service exists in the Resources tab under the component
along with the nv service. I had read in some of the previous posts on the
newsgroups to delete that, but I had not done that. Should I delete it?

Check you "...Quadro NVS with AGP8..." component resources (in SLD file) and
look for "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" resource. It should be a resource
responsible for installing NVSvc Nvidia helper service. You setpapi.log is
compompaing about missing the service data.

I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS AGP8x card and I have created a component
for
the
driver using the .inf file. This is not the detonator driver, but
rather
the driver that dell provided. I used the one from dell because the
one
from Nvidia was in a .exe file.

Anyway, I successfully componentized the driver, however it does not
install
successfully. I have looked through the entire newsgroup and some
said
to
include the Class Installer : Display Adapter component and I

Yes, this service fails to start for some reason and it stops the driver
from working when it fails. I recently ran into this problem. As soon as I
disabled the service, my own custom Nvidia component started working. My
application doesn't need the service, so I don't plan on investigating this
further.

Well you're right as were the others who posted in the Newsgroup. Removing
the NV helper server and the nv service from the resources tab seemed to do
the trick. In the setupapi.log, it still tells me all the help files are
missing and again not sure why, but not it at least installs the driver.

Hopefully someone can figure out why we need to remove the driver helper
service.

Yes, this service fails to start for some reason and it stops the driver
from working when it fails. I recently ran into this problem. As soon as I
disabled the service, my own custom Nvidia component started working. My
application doesn't need the service, so I don't plan on investigating this
further.

As far as help files go, check the root settings under "Other Settings". If
do not copy help files is checked then... No help files for ANY coponent
will be copied to your target. This setting is also available locally for
each component. Un-checking this box adds a lot of stuff, so be sure you
want all that extra help baggage.

Hi Russell,

I took a little time to clarify what is happening with full drivers from
NVIDIA.
For test purposes I have used new ForceWare drivers version 53.03.

It appears that it is enough to copy all files without modification (if you
are not concerned with size of your image) to their appropriate folders.

During the FBA if any card from NVIDIA is detected it will be installed.
I have checked registry and everything is there: nv, NvSvc sections are
installed and present in post FBA registry.

To speed testing I have:
1. Removed from my build support for video cards (one component).
2. Created build from TD.
3. Manually copied NVIDIA files to appropriate folders in pre FBA image.
4. Run FBA.
5. Verified that everything is ok.


You should:

1. Create component that will only copy files to their folders(nothing
more).
2. Include this component in your image.
3. Include component: "Device: Display" so you can use it to set default
resolution.
4. Create build.

This procedure is very clean, and it will support all cards based on any
NVIDIA chipset.
Also in same way you can include any other manufacturer like ATI, etc.

Well you're right as were the others who posted in the Newsgroup. Removing
the NV helper server and the nv service from the resources tab seemed to do
the trick. In the setupapi.log, it still tells me all the help files are
missing and again not sure why, but not it at least installs the driver.

Hopefully someone can figure out why we need to remove the driver helper
service.

Yes, this service fails to start for some reason and it stops the driver
from working when it fails. I recently ran into this problem. As soon as I
disabled the service, my own custom Nvidia component started working. My
application doesn't need the service, so I don't plan on investigating this
further.

I believe that you should disable the service data in your component to fix
the issue.

I have not looked closely in to the Nvidia driver package but my guess would
be that XPe INF parser adds the service data resource to the result SLD. FBA
(XPe) also processes the INF AddService request. Since the service is
already there the FBA inf (setupapi) processing fails to install the driver.
If it so, then it might be defined as a bug in XPe tools.
I think it may be easy to verify the problem on XP Pro. Just add NVSvc
service at start and then try to install the inf file. If it fails - you
repro the problem.

along with the nv service. I had read in some of the previous posts on the
newsgroups to delete that, but I had not done that. Should I delete it?

Check you "...Quadro NVS with AGP8..." component resources (in SLD file) and
look for "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" resource. It should be a resource

It appears that it is enough to copy all files without modification (if

are not concerned with size of your image) to their appropriate folders.

What do you mean by "their appropriate folders"?
To speed testing I have:
1. Removed from my build support for video cards (one component).
2. Created build from TD.
3. Manually copied NVIDIA files to appropriate folders in pre FBA image.
4. Run FBA.
5. Verified that everything is ok.

Again, what are the "appropriate folders" in the pre FBA image that you
place the nvidia driver files? I don't know if you read what I wrote in my
previous posts, but I cannot even manually install the full driver on my XPE
image. To install the nv helper service and all that junk, I think that
there is some sort of dependency preventing me from even doing it manually,
hence it fails during FBA.

You should:
1. Create component that will only copy files to their folders(nothing more).
2. Include this component in your image.
3. Include component: "Device: Display" so you can use it to set default
resolution.
4. Create build.

Steps 2-4 make sense, but I am unsure of what you mean by 1). What does one
do differently from a regular importation of the .inf file that will "only
copy files to their folder"?

And I think it's really important for me to stress again that I cannot
install the nvidia driver manually even. So I think if I do what you
suggest here correctly, it will still not work. Which leads me to believe
that for it to work right, some other component must be present to make all
that nvhelper garbage work.

Well you're right as were the others who posted in the Newsgroup. Removing
the NV helper server and the nv service from the resources tab seemed to do
the trick. In the setupapi.log, it still tells me all the help files are
missing and again not sure why, but not it at least installs the driver.

Hopefully someone can figure out why we need to remove the driver helper
service.

I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS AGP8x card and I have created a component for the
driver using the .inf file. This is not the detonator driver, but rather
the driver that dell provided. I used the one from dell because the one
from Nvidia was in a .exe file.

Anyway, I successfully componentized the driver, however it does not install
successfully. I have looked through the entire newsgroup and some said to
include the Class Installer : Display Adapter component and I did, but still
no success.

I am pasting the section from the setupapi.log file relevant to this driver.
Hopefully some of the experts here can give me some tips. Please note that
I am not sure of why it complains about files missing because those files
are in the repository and their effective path in the Files tab is correct.

Have you read whole this thread (more than 12 posts), and tried my solution?

BTW: Exe file from NVIDIA is self extracting zip file. You can use something
like WinZip to extract it.
