Number 1 appended to file names

Good day. Excel 2003 is appending a 1 to all the file names when I open
Excel. For example, when opening test.xls it opens as test1.xls. When I
click save it is giving me the "save as" window instead, as the file name
does not exist yet. Anyone know how to alleviate this?

Thanks.

I think Frank answered the question if you were seeing:

test.xls:1

But I have a couple of followups:

Are you sure you see the .xls in the title bar?

And is that workbook stored on your harddrive/network drive or is it an
attachment to an email?

What you describe is the behavior of a Template file being opened.

I would suggest that Test.xls was perhaps saved as a Template and is actually
Test.XLT
