Excel 2003 File Rename Problem

I have purchased Office 2003 Basic Edition.

Currently, when I open a file on a SBS2000 network share, I can edit
and save the file as a different name or same name. Example: original
file name test.xls
, new file name test1.xls with changes. I save the file by using the
File - Save As Command and changing name.

However, if I attempt to close the file using the X button or close
button for the file in the upper right right hand corner of the
screen, the new file test1.xls is renamed to some numberic number like
23445 and its extension is not .xls but some other format. If I go
back to my file share and look for test1.xls, it is not there, but
23445 file is there.

Has anyone come across this problem before, and is there an update/fix
for it.

thanks,

This can occur in previous versions of excel, too.

When you save a workbook in excel, it saves as that funny 8 character name.
If all goes well, xl will delete the original (or rename it *.xlk if you're
creating backups).

Then if that goes well, xl will rename the funny name to the original's name.

Something bad happened with your Save.

The things that usually get blamed are (interferring) antivirus software and
network problems (permissions or hardware problems).

Your job will be to isolate the possible causes. If you can disable the
antivirus and xl then works ok, then yell at the IT folks about the AV software.

If it still has trouble, but you can save to your local harddrive ok, then yell
about the network.

Either way, you get to yell!

(well, unless you're the IT department.)
