every time i start my Win XP Pro fully patched via windows update, i get an
error regarding ntvdm.exe it says unable to start 16 bit dos something,
there is not enough memory, quit some applications and try again. i have 512
RAM.
Help,

NTVDM only starts when you attempt to launch a 16 bit application. It's not
the sort of thing always hanging out waiting for you to use it.

Do you have anything in All Programs --> Startup?

You might also run "msconfig" and check the Startup tab... see if there is
anything in there that might be the culprit.

how do i know which thing is 16 bit and is the culprint in msconfig...

anything in there that might be the culprit.

You could try to launch each item and see which one produced the NTVDM
error...

i have HP digital imaging in start up and kodak software for my digital
camera.. but if i remember correctly this problem has been there since HP
scanner cum printer is installed.

This is the exact message that comes up on startup... "Insufficient memory
to run this application. Quit one or more windows applications and then try
again." I have disabled most of the things in the start up and am trying
again.

Trying starting up all items in START UP in PROGRAMS menu.. they don't have
any error.. HP imaging is clean.. now trying msconfig START UP items..
