NTVDM CPU ERROR MESSAGE

I need help! When I try to run the cmd or regedit from the start menu, I get
the following message: "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
C5:0557 IP:fff2 OP:fe ff 1d 0902 Choose 'close to terminate the
application". Then it gives me two choices to click ignore or close. I
previously had viruses on my computer and has had them removed. But I think
they have prevented me from making changes to the registry. I have updated
my virus program and ran several sweeps in safe mode and the program does not
detect any viruses. I have even went to different virus program websites to
use their scanner and all of them have found no viruses. Is there anyone out
there that has any suggestions that can help me resolve my problem?

Something is amiss with your system.

That error message is associated with problems involving 16 bit
applications (Windows 3.x or MS-DOS) and both cmd.exe and regedit.exe
are full 32 bit Windows apps.

This sounds like it may be caused by an incomplete removal of one of
the trojans that blocks the use of Regedit.

You did not mention the specific products that you have tried. If you
have not previously used any of these you should try them:
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck

Thank your Ron for your help.
First I had installed Norton Internet Security 2005 on my computer. Ran a
scan and it found a virus on my system. But it could not clean, quarantine,
or delete the files that were infected. Then I tried Computer Associates
virus program and it removed some not all. When Microsoft came out with the
free Live Safety Center I gave it a try and did a full system scan. It
removed all of the viruses so it said. But I still was not able to to open
the command prompt or the registry using run from the start menu. I went to
the websites that you listed and Kaspersky found a virus called Itsbar.nh in
my archives files but it did not list any solutions on how to remove it.
Another thing I noticed today, I was reading some of the other posts from
people who were experiencing the same problems and I came across a solution
that said that instead of typing "cmd" in the open box, type in "cmd.exe
because "cmd.com " is not a system file but probably a virus. So I tried
typing "cmd.exe" in the open box and it opened the commmand prompt. I also
did the the same thing for my registry by typing "regedit.exe" instead of
"regedit" and it worked. The person suggested to find the file "cmd.com and
delete it. But when I tried to find the file by using windows explorer, it
could not find it. How can I find this file to delete it? I have upadated
my virus program and ran several scans in safe mode but it does not detect
any viruses. Oh I forgot to mention to that I also tried the Sysclean
scanner from Trend Miro and scanned with their scanner and the log showed
where a lot of files that were scanned were denied acces to cleaning them.
Do you have any other suggestions to help me fix the problems that I am
having? I have had it with this pesky little bug!!!
