I tried everything and reinstalling the software, ran the windows
capatability wizard and still no results. I restored my sytem to january 17
and "wallah" my program worked but I lost other programs "tax cut" so I undid
my last restore and again encountered the same problem. I failed to mention
Wes that I am using Windows XP service pack 2.

You also failed to mention, Gary, what TRAVERSE.EXE is and where you got it.
I made a couple of guesses, but still do not know.

Many things can cause a The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
error.

For example; I typed the following line in a command prompt...

NTDETECT /?

and received the following error message...

---------------------------
16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
---------------------------
Command Prompt - NTDETECT /?
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0fea IP:1073 OP:63 43 61 72 64 Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.
---------------------------
Close Ignore
---------------------------

Same error for NTDETECT.COM /?

ntdetect.com is a component of Microsoft Windows NT operating systems that
operate on the x86 architecture. It is used during the Windows NT Startup
Process, and is responsible for detecting basic hardware that will be
required to start the operating system.

ntdetect.com is invoked by NTLDR (NT Loader, the boot loader for Windows
NT), and returns the information it gathers to NTLDR when finished, so that
it can then be passed on to ntoskrnl.exe (NT Kernel & System), the Windows
kernel.

NTDETECT.COM detects the type of hardware you have and matches it against
the NT Registry database
- PC's machine ID byte
- bus type
- video board
- keyboard type
- serial ports
- parallel ports
- floppy drives
- mouse
