By default, Windows will attempt to execute .EXE files when you open
them. Given what you wrote above I REALLY wouldn't suggest your playing
with NTOSKRNL.EXE, but if you have your heart set on it, you'll need a
program called a resource editor. Do a Google search on "Reshacker" and
you'll find what you need.

Good luck...I think you'll need it. And please remember, NTOSKRNL.EXE is
the heart of Windows -- if you mess up the file you will break your
system. You should have a copy of NTOSKRNL.EXE "just in case", and I'd
suggest that you install the Recovery Console on your system in the
event you need to replace the file.

Enid, why are you trying to change your boot screen? Does this have anything
to do with your other post about the missing hal.dll? Give us some more
information about what you are trying to do before you start messing with
something that will hose Windows.

Since you apparently could get into your system after doing the hal.dll fix,
make sure you've backed up all your data.

You've made a good decision. You can really mess up your computer if you do
the boot screen wrong. One boot screen changer program that works well is
BootSkin. I've never used it so I can't tell you if it is easy or not. My
son has it on his laptop and says it is good. YMMV.
