NTLDR & NTDETECT.COM files following XP /2000 Dual Boot

Hi All,

If I install Windows 2000 on an existing Windows XP
machine on a completely separate primary drive with an
NTFS format do I still need to repair Windows XP by
copying the back up files NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM.

I understand these have to be copied into the machine by
initially booting up Windows 2000 following the install.

Can you please let me know the following:

- do I copy these files onto the drive containing Windows
XP or Windows 2000?
- if its the drive containing Windows XP is it actually
possible to reach this after Windows 2000 is actually
installed - does everything not get partitioned?
- which folder do I need to copy these files into - is it
\I386 for instance?
- any other advice around this would be very much
appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards,

DRTP -
my understanding is that if you install Windows 2000 after Windows XP, you
will need to copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files from Windows XP back onto
your boot drive.

These files should be dropped in the root of your boot drive (the same
location that the boot.ini file is located - usually C:). You should be
able to do this from Windows 2000.
