NT LM Services Blocking

A pop-up asked if I'd like to terminate NT LM Services (or something
similar) as they are not normaly needed and reducing the attack surface is
always good. I agreed but I left the always remember box checked (unusual for
me and very dumb). Lo and Behold, I need that service to run.
So, I went into services and tried to restart it. EEENNHHHH!!! My guess
is, Antispy has locked it somehow. I checked the blocked thingies in the
program and nothing is listed under any of them anywhere. No block points. I
shut off Antispy and tried starting the service. Still locked!

You are talking about the messenger service.

Responding to that popup simply disables startup of the messenger service.
This is completely reversable, via services.msc--in fact, I've just done it.

NT LM Security Support Provider (DISABLE) - Not necessary unless you use Message
Queuing or a Telnet server.

*If* this is the (exact) service to which you refer!
As Bill said, run "services.msc" from your Run > Dialog box.
Scroll to the service > Start-up Type > "disabled" > Service Status > Stopped,
Apply both and OK your way out.

Do so at your own peril...

It was up for a while, actually I'm surprised to hear that it's down
again - you can find a kind-of-mirror of his site at Major Geeks.
Proceed with extreme caution tweaking your services!

Happy tweaking!

Hi Silj / (Randy)

I am trying to convience some "extreme tweakers" that
they must learn what all services is used for before they tweak.

And Black Viper is a excellent place for that to learn and
a quick reference to check.

Mostly gamers which wants milliseconds extra ;)
