HELP: USB and "services"

D

David C

My USB devices both suddenly didn't work today, after doing nothing
administrative since it last worked. Nothing unusual was noticed.

Since I installed my Handspring Visor HotSync cradle, I had some
problems from the very beginning when using XP Pro. I found an
article somewhere on Google at the time which eventually showed me a
workaround. I restarted a service it pointed me to (looked like it
had to do with USB), and then exitted the HotSync TSR from the tray,
and re-loaded it from the Start menu. Eventually, it sometimes just
worked from startup, and other times I had to just exit/re-load the
HotSync program. I rarely had to go back in and restart the
"service".

Today, it still wasn't working after the usual operations, so I looked
through the services and found Universal Plug and Play Device Host,
which I think is the one I used to stop and re-start. I tried that.
Didn't work. Re-booted and tried everything again. Still nothing.
So eventually I tried my other USB device - a digital camera...
nothing.

So I tried searching the newsgroups, couldn't find anything quickly,
so stupidly started fiddling with the Properties of this service. I
changed the "Log On" to "Local System Account". That didn't work
because it needs to have the same Log On as its dependent service. I
tried changing it back to "This Account", but the account name was
gone (the password appeared to be still there).

I explored further. The dependency tab lists SSDP Discovery Service.
I checked the properties of that service, and sure enough, it had the
same name that used to be in Universal Plug and Play Device Host. I
copied it over. Now it wants a better password. The dots
representing the previous password are still showing, but apparently
the password is not remembered from before. Since I have no idea how
this account and password were entered in the first place, I certainly
don't know it. I assume it's either a Windows default, or my USB
device related software installed it, or someone has attacked my
computer. The user name was: NT AUTHORITY\LocalService. The password
appears to have 15 characters.

Basically, I would love to know anything you can tell me about how
these services work, and where this username and password came from
(or should come from). I am a Computer Engineering graduate, but I
work in hardware, I am not a PC or windows expert (obviously) - but I
can probably understand a detailed explanation.

Also, of course, any quick fix ideas or procedures would be great.
Any advice on how to check low-level what's happening on the USB bus
would be good as a last resort. I'd rather not ask to bring a 'scope
home from work, and my only experience with watching a USB bus on a
'scope in the past was seeing a 1ms tick fly by.

Please post a follow-up to this NG, this account is uncheckable due to
spam, so I use it for post-only and cannot receive e-mail.

Thanks,
David
