notify shutdown completed with AT-power unit

T

TOM

Hello!

I am using XPProf on a computer with an AT-Power unit. WIN98 told me after
shut down in a polite manor that I could switch off the computer now.
However, XP tells me nothing, regardless if
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
PowerdownAfterShutdown is set to "0" or "1". The screen is just saying that
it is shutting down the computer and I can see that is has completed the
task when the lights of the panel go off. Does anybody know how I can get XP
to notify me that it has successfully completed shut-down?

PowerdownAfterShutdown Determines whether the Shut Down and Power Off option
appears in the Shut Down Computer dialog box. (This dialog box appears when
you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then click the Shut Down button.) on NT 4.0
and earlier. With XP if the BIOS supports it, you should see it anyway.

Some computers have BIOS that allows the computer to be powered off by
software. The PowerdownAfterShutdown entry lets you take advantage of this
feature. If you enable this feature, a radio button labeled Shutdown and
Power Off is added to the Shutdown dialog box on NT 4.0 and earlier.
--------

In XP, if you get the, "It is now safe to turn off your computer", you have
problems.

When you shutdown Windows XP, Windows shuts down your machine, you do not
have to do it like with Windows 98.

Tom,

I have all of my computer equipment plugged into a multi-outlet surge
suppressor. I use the power switch on the surge suppressor to turn
everything off after I shut down Windows. The monitor stays powered until I
hit that switch. I can tell when the tower has powered down and Windows has
finished when I see the Attention - No Signal message on the monitor, that's
when I hit the surge suppressor power switch.

That message is exactly what I want to get. The question is not how to
avoid it but how to make it appear.
Apart from that my computer shuts down just fine. I always will have to
switch off the power manually because it has an AT-power unit. I only want
to be prompted when shut down it is completed to avoid switching it off to
early which is fatal.

Regards Tom

Wes,

now I know how you switch off your computer but this is still no answer to

Windows NT OSes configure a Hardware Abstract Layer (HAL) that
customizes NT (also called XP) to every unique motherboard. Does a
driver exist so that XP can talk to power off circuit? Power supply
controller is on motherboard. Hardware manufacturer must provide
software (to Microsoft) for powering off that motherboard. Informative
word is Windows 98 and AT. IOW motherboard design maybe so old that
motherboard manufacturer did not provide an NT driver (for HAL). AT or
ATX? AT power supply systems did not have a power supply controller on
motherboard - required a manual switch. When and after Windows 98
arrived, all motherboards should have been ATX designed and also for
NT. Some did not bother. For example, many Gateway machines were so
poorly designed as to therefore be declared only for Windows 9x/ME.

You are at the mercy of that motherboard manufacturer. If software
was not provided so that NT could talk to a power supply controller,
then no options exist. Does motherboard manufacturer specifically
state motherboard is for NT (XP)? Does a power supply controller even
exist (is it only AT type)?
