Dazed and Confused!

Hello All.

Firstly, thank you in advance for any replies, I need the help!

After uninstalling some software my Windows XP machine suddenly
stopped displaying the "now connected" bubble and the Connection icon
in the Notification area.

The problem gets more sinister: NO bubbles appear, and I cannot
disconnect any connection once I have connected (I have a LAN ,
Wireless LAN and a Broadband connection). Even going into 'Network
Connections', right clicking the connection and choosing 'Disconnect'
does not disconnect the connect. The window hangs for a moment, then
carries on its merry little way. The connection simply won't
disconnect unless I reboot.

I've checked the bubbles setting in TweakUI XP, I've checked the 'Show
icon in notification area whilst connected' check box in my network
connection.

Any advice on how I can restore my PC back to its proper state?
Again, thanks for any replies,
Have a nice day y'all!

What was the software you uninstalled? That would be a great help.

In the meantime:

Check your settings here:
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Advanced/
Disconnect when...

When you quit Internet Explorer, you may not be prompted to disconnect even
if the Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed option is enabled.

The following registry value also verifies that the option is enabled: Go to
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Profile\"Connection
Name"\EnableExitDisconnect. The value should be 01 00 00 00.

To set Idle TimeOut:

1. The Idle TimeOut option in Dial-Up Networking must be set for the
connection to hang up after being idle. Open the Dial-Up Networking dialog
box, and select User Preferences from the More button.

2. Disable Autodial by location, and set Idle Seconds Before Hanging Up to
the desired amount of time: This value should be greater than 60.

3. Choose Logon Preferences from the More button, and set Idle Seconds
Before Hanging Up to the same value as User Preferences.

4. Open Control Panel/Services and disable the Remote Access Autodial
Manager service.

Another option: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
.. In the right pane, find Autodisconnect and change the time accordingly.

Or...

Start/Run/net config server /autodisconnect:30 (30 being an example).

The software was a trial of Destop X, a program which covers the
standard explorer shell with various styles. It is not a complete
shell replacement (like LiteStep), its more a program that just
displays on top of everything else. WEll, thats my interetation of it!

If the shell has been damaged can I repair it?
I really want to avoid a reinstall of XP as it seems both drastic and
will cause alot of disruption.

I've messed with the connection settings as you surgested, but I think
the problem really isn't with the connection, its mainly with the
notification area.

Thanks again for everyones help. If you would like any more info
please ask me, I do apreciate the help everyone :)
