Network connection icon disappeared

I suspect that a recent update or hot fix has created a problem for me. My
network connection icons no longer appear in the notification area.

For my main connection, it's not a big problem. But when I use my VPN
connection, the network connection icon doesn't appear, so I am not able to
readily disconnect the connection.

To make things worse, I am unable to disconnect even when I go to the
Network Connections section on the control panel. I have to reboot to
disconnect the connection.

Each connection in the Network Connection File can be set individually
to customize the system tray.
