NOTHING with Left Click Menu with right Click

What has gone 'off' if the left click on the desktop IExplore icon produces
no result but a right click will give the choices menu. Open will work from
the right click menu. The shortcuts in the taskbar would not respond to left
click either but the right click menu is available and Internet Explorer
would open.
I'm asking for a friend who is using IE6 on a win98 networked to a WinXp
and accessing the internet through the WinXp machine.

I would say that your settings for the speed of double click have changed to
'fast'. Goto Control Panel --> Mouse and drag the slider labeled
Double-click speed to slow and then try. It should work.

Well, something must have gone wrong because doing the 'repair Ie' in the
add remove section produced the result to do the setup.exe. Running the
setup.exe brought everything back to normal. PLUS updating spyware
definitions produced a list of resident spies including the newdotnet thing.
I'll keep your suggestion in the list of possibilites for the future. Thanks
