I seem to have lost my Notepad function - file notepad.exe

When I click on the Notepad Icon from the Accesories menu
nothing happens. WHen I click on a text file in Windows
Explorer I get an error message that says notepad.exe
file is not found.

I use to have this function and it seems to have
disapperared. Any reason for this and how can I restore
it?

Thank you

There have been rather a lot of these posts lately. Whenever that
happens, it is usually because there is a rash of viruses and/or spywre
going around. So, here's the usual answer:

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also,
remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also need to
run CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html .
Please read the instructions carefully. Also, make sure you've visited
Windows Update and applied all security patches. Do not install driver
updates from Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall.

Somehow "notepad.exe" on "c:\windows\system32" was corrupted.

I am not sure which virus or spyware causes this.
Does anyone have answer for this problem?

To fix notepad.exe, just copy "notepad.exe" from
"c:\windows" to "c:\windows\system32"

It appears that a malware item replaces it; and then itself gets
removed. Notepad.exe should be present in both c:\windows\system32 and
in c:\ windows. Check in both places, make sure the one you find
works, by double clicking on it, and copy to the other one if there is
no copy there. There should also be a reserve copy in windows\dllcache
- if the ones you find do not work on a double click, delete them and
system file protection will copy from that cache in a few seconds
