Notepad error

When I try to open notepad I get the following error
message:

The C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.exe application cannot be
run in Win32 mode.

Does anyone know what I can do about this. My system is
XP Professional Version 2002.

You have a virus infection, possible the Worm.Win32.Ladex. Get the
infected machine off the Internet and any lans. Scan with a current
antivirus program using updated definitions. If you have this worm, it
is network-aware and so any other computers connected to the infected
one are probably infected also.
