Not sure where to turn for this answer so possible OT

I'm trying to print digital pix from my Olympus digital camera. I want to
print 4x6 prints but the photos are taken at 31.6x23.7 inches. When I
resize the image using PhotoShop the quality is extremely reduced to the
point that the picture is useless. What's the point of having a camera that
shoots poster sized pictures if no one makes a printer that can print them?
Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm sure there are printers out there that can do it.
Just not mine. (Canon i950). What am I doing wrong and how do I correct
the problem?

Please help.
Thanks,
Rich

Perhaps using XP's printing wizard?

Which PS version? PS7 has pint to fit

If you haven't that then Paint Shop Pro which is a trial or more this
has print to fit

Use either.

It sounds like you are not resampling the picture properly.
Most cameras do not capture in picture print size.

So instead of trying to resize the picture for reducing, use the crop
tool.. set it to 4in 6in and resolution to 230 or slightly higher.

You will then find the picture to be perfectly sized.

I find it hard to think that you own photoshop and do not understand
the basics of basic editing tools. I guess photoshop was a gift?

happy birthday anyway.

Your photos not taken at 31.6x23.7. The camera doesn't know anything
about meters, centimeters, or inches. The camera only knows pixel. I
guess that your pictures are about 2300x1700 pixel. This is a normal
value for a 4-million-pixel camera. The point is, that in the header
of the images-file you can specify the dpi-size. For web-publishing
this is normally 72dpi. For a good print you need about 266 dpi. 4x6
prints should not be a problem. You just have to resize using
PhotoShop. I guess you resized, but you kept the 72dpi. Since I do not
use Photoshop I cannot give you the exact settings.

All you need to do is to change the number of pixels per inch (in Photoshop
or any other such program) without resampling.
In Photoshop, select Image/Image Size. This will bring up a box in which
you change the print size to whatever you wish. Unselect resample if it is
checked.

Never resize/resample your original when printing, and never print
from a secondary copy you've made and saved in the .jpg format if the
original is available. Both processes (resizing & .jpg compression)
toss out an enormous amount of detail.

As has already been mentioned, you can tweak the resolution of the
image before printing, but the only size change you should make is to
crop, which might be necessary if the image's proportions don't match
those of the paper.

Photoshop will handle printing to whatever paper size you've specified
in the printer's driver (via File>Page Setup or
File>Print>Properties).

Ouch.

I bought it as a highly recommended tool and have not really found the time
to learn it's intricicacies. I use PaintShop Pro for image creation so I
fairly handy at basic drawing skills but not photo editing.
