Not seeing DVD/CD-ROM drive (E:drive)

Jon

My computer is completely unable to recognize my CD/DVD-
ROM drive - used to work fine, but stopped working
sometime in the last couple months. I have been playing
around with new video editing software (Pinnacle Studio
Version 8), and this may be related to the problem??
Device Manager shows yellow exclamation point (!) over the
DVD/CD-ROM drive listed. When I double-click on the
listing and the General Tab, Device Status reads: "
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this
hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

Short of re-installing my XP O/S, WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX
THIS?!? Help is sincerely appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

Try uninstalling the DVD CD Rom Drive in the hardware settings. Then reboot
and let WinXP find the drive again. It should find the drive and install
the drivers correctly.

What do you do if the driver refuses to uninstall? I get
a message "Failed to uninstall the device. The device may
be required to boot the computer." How can I uninstall
that device?

Thanks,
HoJo

Hi,

Check out:

"Cannot Access CD-ROM and "Code 31" Error Message in Device Manager After
You Remove Adaptec Easy CD Creator from Your Computer"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=270008

"CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314060

The second article also addresses

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot
find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

A patch is available for this. Download the file xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs from the
following web site:

http://tinyurl.com/1q0y

Double click this file, and ignore any errors from your antivirus. This
should solve the problem.

Best of luck,
