DVD-ROM drive non-functional

I run XP Professional Service Pack 2. Every time I try to listen to music
CD's placing them into my d:drive which in my case is a DVD/CD-ROM drive,
MusicMatch as well as Windows Media Player do not recognize the disk. Also,
when I tried to install security updates for MS Office 2000 and was asked to
insert the software CD, the system was unable to read it. I had to change
over to my e:drive which is a CD-RW drive which resolved the problem. Also
music CD's work fine in my e:drive. I have checked the DVD/CD-ROM drive in
Device Manager and it indicates that the device is working properly.
However, using the d:drive causes MusicMatch or Windows Media Player to
freeze up. When I try to reboot the system, a window pops up that reads:
"End Program Shell Icon Hidden Window" and right after that in the same
window I get the message "This program is not responding". When I click on
"End now" the system will not shut down. Rather, I have to press the restart
button of my computer. Please help to resolve this issue. I know I can
uninstall the driver for the DVD/CD-ROM drive using Device Manager but I am
not sure how easy it is to reinstall this device afterwards. Will XP
Professional detect the device and reinstall the driver automatically?

Hi,

It may just be a dirty lens, try a lens cleaner disk. These inexpensive
disks are commonly available at most stores that sell CD/DVD media.

Rick,

thanks for your response. I apologize it took me a while to get back to
you. Unfortunately, it was not as simple as a dirty lens. I had to replace
the entire drive and now it's working fine again.

Regards,

Veit
