Not resolving hosts

Hi,

My sister in law brought her XP computer here because she got fed up
with a few of it's problems.

I was able to kill off the w32/sasser.worm.b she contracted, and also
stop several dozen or so processes that were firing up at boot time.

But one problem I haven't found a cure for is her Internet Explorer no
longer able to resolve host names, Every favorite she has that used to
work now comes up with the server can't be found message.

Any ideas where I should be looking for answers to fixing this?

Thank you very much for any pointers you can offer.

Could it do so before you turned off all the "unnecessary" processes?

Delete the HOSTS file under %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc, where %WinDir% is
the directory Windows is installed.

Hi Crusty,

........Could it do so before you turned off all the "unnecessary" processes?

No, that was her main complaint when she brought me the machine. I
didn't start stopping processes until late last night. I even made a new
connection to a different ISP and had the same results, servers not
being found.

The processes I've disabled were done with StartCop, so it's an easy fix
to start them again if need be. I mostly stopped what I knew were
unnecessary. There's still probably 15 or more things I didn't disable
because I'm not too familiar with XP, I'm a 2000 Pro user myself.

Thanks for the tip on what I forgot to mention in the first place. I'll
firts up her box again and see what's disabled and what's still running,
might be a clue in what's happening.
