Not as simple as....

Hi All,

I have a home network which is connected to a Wireless router via one of the
ports on the router. All machines on the network were fed off an 8 Port
Ethernet Hub which had the internet cable plugged into it.

I have aquired a Cisco 3550 24 port switch and connected the main (Internet
Wireless Cable) into port 1 on the switch then connected all PC's to the
switch. The problem i have now is that none of the PC's can connect to the
Internet. I thought that the Cisco switch would be clever enough to realise
that there is an internet port and share out to the other remaining PC's? I
was obviously wrong. Can anyone guide me in the right direction as to how to
configure the switch in order to allow for ICS.

Thanks in advance.

You have me a little confused when you describe your set up.

The way I understand internet access you need a modem, a router/server and a
hub/switch. You seem to have 2 bits missing - the modem and the router. Were
they built into your old switch? If they were you will never get a simple
switch to connect your computers to the internet without a router and modem.

It may be back to the shop for more hardware or alternativley share an
internet connection using one of the PC's on your network (you will still
need a modem though)

I don't see any issues with Cisco switch. How do you setup ICS? can other computers ping the ICS host? If yes, can they ping a public IP?

Have you run the Cisco express setup? I don't think it will work until this
is run.

Cisco switches are sometimes very complicated to set up. You generally can't
just hook them up and expect them to work. If you bought the switch used
then you may have to reset it and start from scratch.

Why do you want to use ICS? Your setup should look like this.

Modem

Wireless router

Cisco switch
