Norton Upgrade, now xp is majorly corrupted

Hi everyone, looking for some help here.

My wife's antivirus was expired so she upgraded to norton AV 2006.
Uninstalled 2003, installed 2006, and now there are some major problems.
When the computer rebooted, all the desktop icons were gone(just the generic,
i have no application assocaited with me bitmap), and all the programs had
lost their association. whatever you clicked on, a dialog box came up asking
if you want to create a shortcut to the desktop.

So I figured something was corrupt, and reinstalled windows XP. Now when I
start the computer, it asks which operating system I want to run, however,
both are the same "Windows XP home".

#1 loads like a fresh install, however all the programs on the computer are
mising (wiord. excel, etc). and if I go into windows explorer and run it from
there, th eprogram tries to open but says it's not registered to the current
user.

#2 loads with the same problem brfore I reloaded XP.

I'm guessing theres a registry issu ehere, amond others, but don't know
where to begin. I've reloaded windows a few times now.

If I could just get to point where I can do a clean install, without wiping
any data off the HD, I think it will be OK.

Thanks in advance!

While I'm not what our group Troll suggests, a Symantec anything, it
appears that you did a second install and not a reinstall. What you
should have done was a "repair/reinstall" which would have returned
things to normal without all the updates.

Sort of, you have a registry problem, but you have a worse problem -
you've got TWO installs of Windows XP on the same drive, or it appears
that you do.

You can't do a "Clean install" without wiping the data - Clean means
wiping. What you need to do is a "repair/reinstall" which which would
have left your data in tact. At this point I can't suggest how to get
things back to just one Windows XP installation, you might be better
served to backup your files to some external media (CD, drive, etc..)
and then do a WIPE/INSTALL.

One question, when you uninstalled your old AV, did you reboot before
installing the new? Were there any error messages?

Denying your title of Head Symancrap Cheerleader! ROFL!

But Symancrap makes such great products! Hardly anyone has problems
with Symancrap software!

Biggest error message. Installing NAV! :)

I tried to repair "r", as well as use auto restore, but that got me nowhere.

Yes, it seems there are two versions of XP on the same drive, which I don't
understand how that's even possible, wouldn't reinstalling overwrite the
corrupt one? at least thats how I understood it.

Can I "wipe" the XP directory for a clean install without loosing data on
other areas of the drive, such as folders off the root directory?

And if so, when do I need to do to get rid of BOTH xp installs, or at least
get rid of the one that does not work anymore?

Thanks

Hi,

You created a parallel installation rather than repairing the original one.
Boot to the old one, uninstall the update and run system restore to a time
prior to the update. If it seems to be working correctly, then we can remove
the secondary installation.

Repair option is not the same as "repair/reinstall" method, as you've
seen.

Not always, you can actually install it twice as long as you don't use
the same default Windows folder - it will try and use some of the same
folders for Program Files, etc... But the Windows root folder should be
different - do you have C:\WINDOWS and C:\Windows0 or something like
that?
Can I "wipe" the XP directory for a clean install without loosing data on

I don't know, I've never done it myself. I hate to suggest this, but,
you might be able to edit the BOOT.INI file to remove the newer one,
then boot under the old one, delete the NEW windows folder tree
structure, and be rid of it - but without seeing your exact drive I
would not want you to do this.
And if so, when do I need to do to get rid of BOTH xp installs, or at least
get rid of the one that does not work anymore?

When - after you backup your data/documents. How, wipe the drive and
reinstall from scratch. Do you have a normal XP cd or one of those Quick
Restore CD's that came from a place like Sony or HP or Toshiba?

as far as I recall, there's only one C:\windows directory

It's the disc that came with the computer, OEM style

It seems so. However, when I boot to the old one, I can't uninstall, or run
system restore or anything. Desktop comes up, thats it. none of the
programs, even ones internal to windows, run. I cant even run windows
explorer to run them from there.

Hi Jay,

Hit ctrl+shift+escape, then from the applications tab of Task Manager click
"new task" and run "control appwiz.cpl" to open the Add/Remove dialog. For
System Restore, run "C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe".
