I have up-to-date Norton Internet Security and have run a full system scan.
It did detect spyware and says it has been removed. However, I still get a
“Windows has detected spyware infection.†Pop-up which reads

“Windows has detected spyware infection.

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss.
Windows will now download and install the latest up-to-date antispyware for
you.

Is this a valid Microsoft message or is it a spoof? Should I download WDbeta2?

Chris, I'm not an expert but there is no way I'd respond to that invitation!

Do you have any antispyware software apart from your Norton I.S.? It sounds
as though you don't. How about AdAware, and Spybot - Search & Destroy? Surely
it must be worth installing those (which are free), and Windows Defender. You
could also use the free Ewido online scanner here:

I won't trouble you with my usual "Snortin' Norton" rants, but may I suggest
that you not place all of your security eggs in one basket?

Defender is an excellent "anti-spyware" tool, as are those suggested by
Alan. ewido/AVG is an excellent general anti-malware tool. I use it myself,
along with OneCare, as resident scanners. Just don't stop there. Use
various online scanners often (such as those on the Internet Security page in
my sig.).
