Norton Internet Security 2005

I am using a Packard Bell EasyNote MV preloaded with WindowsXP Home plus SP2
updates & Norton Internet Security 2005. The problem I encountered is that
everytime I boot up with WIFI on I get a popup from NIS advising me to run
their updates as they have found new solutions to problems and to have an
uptodate shield the updates must be done. Everytime I run these NIS updates I
was informed that the downloading was unsuccessful due to lapse time and the
link was disconnected and was advised to retry. Retries also ended in
failure. A search on the error message suggested that NIS 2005 be uninstalled
and reinstalled. I did this many times and the result is stil failure. I have
now concluded that NIS should be permanently disable from my laptop. Any
suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I resisted this conclusion for a long time, simply because so many people
seemed to think that Norton was the best, basing their assumption (I suspect)
on the grounds that once, it was. Or nearly.

I read a lot of adverse opinions about Norton in this newsgroup; and when
time came for me to renew my subscription (I too had 2005, but just the
antivirus software), I discovered a number of things:
1. The support from Symantec is hopeless. I couldn't get satisfactory
answers about even the simplest issues related to renewing my subscription!
Heaven knows what would have happened if I'd had a real problem!
2. Uninstalling it was a mess. I needed to use their special 'Norton removal
tool' in the end.
3. My computer ran SO MUCH more smoothly once it was gone. I bought the AVG
Internet Security suite for only a little more than the Norton subscription,
and that gives me not merely an antivirus, but also real time antispyware
protection (which works well with Defender) and a proper, two-way firewall.
4. AVG support is excellent. If I have a question about anything relating to
the suite, I send them an email and get a reply within a couple of days. Try
doing that with Norton.

There are many other routes to go, rather than AVG. But as far as Norton is
concerned, I've never had the slightest doubt that getting rid of it was a
Very Good Thing.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Also running NIS 2005, but without WIFI. Not getting any update messages
from them other than regular weekly sig updates. Try this 24/7 free
support phone number:
NIS TechSupport : 1-877-832-2810

just be prepared to sit on hold for hours,
while on hold:
go to the bathroom
take a shower
go for a long walk- don't worry you will still be "on Hold"
Alan sums it up very well especially since I convinced Alan to get AVG and
uninstall Norton.
Norton was great 10yrs ago but they got too big and forgot they need to
service their clients not just build a bloated software that causes more
problems then it is worth.
Just make sure once you uninstall it you pick up the removal tool at
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

and run that too.
You should also run ccleaner and look for any registry entries for Norton
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/

Once you uninstall it all pick up AVG antivirus.
You have 2 choices
You can use the pro version or the free version
The main difference besides pro and free:

Pro- gives you full tech support by email and they do answer you back (but
it is not free you have to purchase it)
Pro gives you the ability to change user settings on how you want to scan
Pro gives you a liscense for 2yrs
Pro is more for a business because you can configure networking options
which the free doesn't allow you to do this.

Free- gives you a full featured antivirus program, automatic updates and
scans your computer every day (pro allows you to not scan everyday if you do
not want this but it also does automatic updates)
Free and pro use very little memory especially on bootup

almost all my clients who have home computers I have installed the free
version, my buisness ones the pro version.

I do not recommend the suite (the suite from any program) because if one
part breaks down the whole program doesn't work. I have AVG Pro and AVG
antispyware Pro seperately as sperate programs, yes they cost a bit more but
in the long run it worth it
either one you can pick up here
free-

Pro- also gives you a 30 day trial

You and your computer will be better off if you follow the wisdom of the
above posters.

good... let us know if Symantec still has unreasonable support delays as
Robin suggests. I just might need to call them someday myself.

I haven't called Symantec, will let you know if I have worthy information in
hand. Thanks for showing interest in my minor problem.
