Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help. I bought NIS 2005 in May 2005.
Worked and havent had any problems with Norton in the past up til now. NIS
and AntiSPam are fine but, everytime I click on antivirus I get this error
code...unspecified error: res://C:/program files/norton internet
security/norton antivirus/NAVUIHTM.DLL/navstats.htm:213
error code 3031.101213
It tells me uninstall and reinstall and I have did this 2 times now and same
error code. When I reinstall I run liveupdate ok restart pc and then do a
full system scan comes up okay. I do a defrag then I Restart my pc and get
the same error code when I click on antivirus. Im not going to uninstall this
again. I was hoping maybe somebody would know right off hand what is causing
this and how to fix it.
TIA

The error is coming from a Norton file. It is an application error. You
should check with Symantec's tech support for a fix or workaround.
Suggestion: Install program updates if you haven't already.

Reinstalling your Symantec program after a failed installation
or after you see error messages

Here's some unsolicited advice, uninstall NIS and move on to
another antivirus and firewall program.

Good luck

Unfortunately that appears to be Symantec's take on support these days
for many issues concerning their products, uninstall and re-install.
It appears you've seen this article: http://snipurl.com/lsep
or
http://symantec.atgnow.com/consumer...s.htm:213"+(3031,101213)&resultType=5000

Here's something you may want to attempt to fix the issue if you are
determined to continue using the product.
Go here first and download/run SymNRT.exe, SYMMSICLEANUP.reg and MSIFIX.bat
per the instructions.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...iew=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg

After reinstalling/rebooting, do not run LiveUpdate yet, go here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...iew=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg

After reinstalling/rebooting run LiveUpdate and reboot if required.
Continue doing so until you get the message that all of your products are
up to date.

I appreciate everyones feedback on this issue. Unfortunately good products
dont last long . I never had 1 ounce of problem with norton despite what
everyone says. Although I am not going to be brainwashing my pc all over a
simple patch that norton could offer . I rather uninstall and go with another
antivirus program. Any Idea's? Not McAfee either. Sad thing I still have
another 4 more months of norton that I should be entitled to a refund.

Did you checked if you have malware that disables the antivirus
protection. These days there is a worm called Tearec.A which disables and
damages some AV including Symantec's Norton.

Please ,before going on with your issue ,check for ALL kind of malware using

Hi , Thanks for your response. Do you mean LiveUpdate? If so I have did that.

Workaround?

Live Update is a part of the Norton package. It services any
Norton/Symantec products that you have installed. Going by posts in the
newsgroups, it has a pretty rocky history.

I'm like you, liked Norton fine for many years and for many reasons. When
it's working on your system, it's a fine application. However, as seen in
these newsgroups, when you have trouble with their products - it is a bear
to deal with. Personally I gave up on using their products when they failed
to fix a documented problem (that I experienced on a daily basis) with
their software for over a year.

So even though I think Norton is fine *if it's working without problems on
your system,* my vote goes to finding less troublesome replacements too.
I've used Etrust's EzAntivirus for many years. Program has been great and
trouble free on my computers and those of friends and family. However, I
have no idea how good their tech support is (have never had to use it).

Recently I've tried aVast! (free version) and AntiVir (another free
antivirus program) on some test systems I'm running. I like both of these
free products very much. aVast! offers a pay version of their program as
well.

Kaspersky's is another well known antivirus program/company. On the
expensive side but offers good protection and good tech support. This
program is a little more advanced - lots of filtering and tweaking options
but it comes with a good basic set of default settings already enforced.

I think choosing an antivirus program should be based on ratings of
effectiveness. From there, you need to try a few to find out which work
best with your hardware/software mix. Through the years, I've found that
"mix" (hardware/software) bears a direct correlation as to what antivirus
product is "best."

AVG, for example, is used happily by many users but it has never liked my
mix so I've had to skip using it. However, it does stay on my list of "ones
to try/recommend" because there are so many good reports about it.

Whether you try again to accomplish a "clean" reinstall of NIS 2005, or
replace NIS 2005 with other security programs, like AVG Free Anti-Virus
and Kerio Firewall, for example, you should, if you haven't already,
make sure you have deleted all NIS 2005 files. The uninstall of NIS
2005 will leave a lot of files on your computer. Use the Search
function to locate all NIS 2005 related files and manually delete
them.

Should I uninstall NIS 2005 then use the search to locate on files NIS 2005
left behind and delete them. Then reinstall NIS? Im not sure if Im going to
do this or not but, it does like a good idea. Just strange that it worked
even after I reinstalled it and ran liveupdate and even worked when I did a
full system scan then after I did a restart and oped NIS up and clicked on
antivirus it was error, error, and another strange thing when I click on scan
for virus's it bring up the page of course everything is blank then on the
bottom right of the page where you click to create a custom scan the green
arrow is highlighted so when I clicked on that it brought up then the norton
antivirus auto-protect page comes up just fine. Also when I clicked on
options and antivirus it gave me a 4002 error code. Hmm.

I was wondering have you ever had any problems using just the NAV program?
Was curious what your thoughts are with just going with that and using
windows firewall? AVG Sounds like a plan but, unless I overlooked it
somewhere it didnt say what pc they were campatible with. Ya Im like you or
not but, anyhow I prefer something a little less advanced. Thanks for your
input

Should you decide to try a clean reinstall one more time, you should
make sure that all parts of NIS 2005 are removed. As Brian A. points
out, you can use Symantec's removal utility to help accomplish this
task or, as I have previously indicated, you can use the Search
function to manually remove remnants left over after you use the
Add/Remove to uninstall NIS 2005. Your choice. If you do use the
search function, after you delete the files shown, repeat the search
and keep removing until no more files are shown.

With regard to using other security programs to replace NIS2005, I
would offer the following: I, too, at one time was a user of Symantec's
NIS and I eventually got rid of it because it became a bloated,
ponderous, resource hog. Each new annual release brought on one or
more problems. In my opinion there are free programs available to
replace NIS 2005, which are lighter, faster, use less resources, and
provide the same or better protection.

A suggestion to things simple for you: If you are on a broadband
connection (not dial-up), I suggest you purchase a router (D-Link, for
example). The cost will be between $35-$45. This will give you your
firewall protection. Then add a freeware anti-virus program. Just
Google to find out the ones available; there are plenty. I use AVG
Free; it contains the virus scanning of all incoming and outgoing
email.

NAV was the program with the unfixed error and the reason I gave up on
Symantec. They may have finally fixed it but I'm not going to try them
again to find out.

Not sure what you mean by "what PC they are compatible with." Apparently
hardware requirements are modest as only the level of operating system is
mentioned here:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01#Compatibility

Ah, wait a minute! Found the hardware requirements in their technical FAQ.

Quote:
"Minimal hardware configuration which can be used for AVG installation is a
PC with 486, 32 MB RAM memory and 30 MB free space on the hard drive."

I wish to go on record has having a perfectly frightful experience with NAV,
in which it tried to run my life and used up all my resources. Like being
married!

AVG was recommended to me by my web host, and I have had nothing but good
luck with it. I'm assuming you are on XP, if you are in this newsgroup, so
we should be playing on the same field.
