I ran norton disk doctor and there are problems found
with the file system. But when I let norton do the fix, I
get this error message,
"norton cannot perform the fix because it needs exclusive
access of the computer. there are files or programs
still running.

And in the event viewer,

"Run Norton Disk Doctor and check the Fix Errors option"
Did you then do as directed and reboot your computer?
That's when Disk Doctor can fix the file system.

Yes,I checked fix and then ran norton disk doc. But when
booted norton said it could not do a fix that it needed
exclusive access to the computer, no other programs or
files running. Does that mean I would have to disable
some start up programs?

No, don't close programs. Somewhere along the way you
should have seen - possibly in the Details message - a
question about do you want to schedule a repair. Answer
in the affirmative, exit Disk Doctor and go about your
business. Shut down your computer when you are through
with your other activities. The next time you start up
your computer, you should see a blue screen with notice
of the repair be conducted. I agree that the
instructions for this Disk Doctor could be improved. The
next time you start your computer - after the blue screen
repair notice and all loading is done - to check on
things run Disk Doctor again. This time DO NOT have Fix
Errors checked. All reports should be OK this time.

Did all instructions carefully but the same message
still comes up. I do get the blue screen at boot, but
it's not a fix, it's another scan again. Then when the
scan is over norton gives me that can't fix message
again. Says need exclusive access to pc before it can
fix. I have gone through the whole entire thing 5 times
now and norton still reports a fix needed for the
security descriptors on the disk. Windows reported the
volunm clean.
