Norton AV, AVG Free and Netscape e-mail

Hello

My Norton AV subscription has expired and I'm thinking of trying out AVG
Free.
I assume the sensible thing to do is un-install Norton AV before I
install AVG.

My question is: I use Netscape 7.1 e-mail, how do I protect myself here
considering that AVG Free does not support Netscape e-mail
Thanks for any suggetsions

Thank you for the response.
Is there a recommended free anti-virus software that also protects
Netscape e-mail, or is there a way of scanning any attachments on
Netscape e-mail using AVG before opening it

Thanks

Avast! antivirus (www.avast.com) is free and will scan email in any POP
email client, but needs manual configuration to do it. I'd still
recommend shelling out for NOD32 though....

Hi,
AVG does have a universal e-mail scanner, obtainable from
http://www.grisoft.cz/beta/avgemc/avgemc_en.htm

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and download avgemc483us.exe
which is the English version. I have just set it up to use with my non
Microsoft e-mailer and configuration is a bit of a tease. There seem
to be a few gaps in information but if you like solving riddles it can
be done. I'll tell you how I managed if you need help.

Thanks kindly for the offer to help. I'm a newbie, and I need it.

I am assuming that once I install the universal e-mail scanner, than it
will work automatically with all subsequent virus updates for AVG.
I've read the following installation procedures, and am trying to make
sense of it
"Manual procedure:

1. Extract files from this archive to the directory where AVG
Anti-Virus System is installed
2. Restart AVG Control Center = Quit and start it again (you will
need the update 404 or higher)
3. Go to the AVG Control Center's "E-Mail Scanner" property page and
setup E-Mail Scanner parameters
4. Modify your mail-client application settings for POP3 and SMTP
servers - follow the instructions in the help file"

My questions
1 I have AVG Free version 6.0.576 - I assume that this meets the system
installation requirements for "update 404 or higher". Correct?

2. I have to place the extracted files in the AVG6 folder In Grosoft in
ProgramFiles folder. Yes?

3. The AVG Control Centre does not have an "Exit" button. Do I have to
restart the computer to get the e-mail scanner installed?

4. In the "E-Mail Scanner" property page - I don't see anything related
to settings for POP3 server here or in the Help file. I am assuming that
these settings will appear once I install the scanner (if I can)

Thanks for any suggestions

1. Extract files from this archive to the directory where AVG
Anti-Virus System is installed
Yes to 1.
2. Restart AVG Control Center = Quit and start it again (you will
need the update 404 or higher)

I either did a reboot or simply right clicked the task tray
icon (bottom right of desktop) and chose Shut Down AVG Control Centre.
Try that last one first.

When you reopen the control centre an item Mail Proxy will have
appeared. Click on 'configure' and then 'add'. Make sure the 'Server
type and protocol' box is set to 'POP3' for the first entry and then
to SMTP for the next. Set up one at a time. Click on 'Connection'.
Choose 'Fixed Host' and type the name of your POP3 Mail Server. You
will find this on your e-mailer Tools/Accounts/Properties. Make a note
of the number probably 5200 in the 'Local Port Box'. OK it and a box
will open with your account details listed as eg. POP3 Port 5200 host
mail.your ISP.com. Choose OK and then Cancel to clear AVG from your
screen.

Go to your e-mailer, and choose 'Tools/Accounts'. Click on the name
of your account and then 'properties', navigate to the 'server'
settings and in place of your e-mail server name, type in 127.0.0.1
This will be for both incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP boxes. Navigate
to where you have the 'Server Port NUmbers' will probably be 25 for
POP3, change this to the 5200 number (or whatever it was you noted),
do the same for the SMTP box, probably 110, with your noted number
probably 5201 OK everything and all being well that should do it.
3. Go to the AVG Control Center's "E-Mail Scanner" property page and
setup E-Mail Scanner parameters
4. Modify your mail-client application settings for POP3 and SMTP
servers - follow the instructions in the help file"

As I wrote earlier, I think it was just a question of right clicking
on the tray icon and choosing shut down and then restart.

See above

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. I'm almost there,
but still have one problem. I cannot get any incoming messages from my
ISP. I get the following error message: Mail server 127.0.0.1 responded:
cannot connect to the host.

I have no problems sending out mail, so I assume my SMTP settings are fine.

I use Netscape 7.1 e-mail client. My local port number for POP3 is set
to 5110 on both my email client and AVG email scanner. I believe I have
a login problem going from AVG to my incoming host. I tried the "fixed
host" option for login as recommended, but that did not work. I then
tried "USER@COMPUTER" option. For this I changed my User Name setting on
my Netscape from User1 to (e-mail address removed). No luck. I've tinkered
with other combinations as well. No luck at all

I also tried to follow the settings recommended for "Mozilla" in the
Help section. No dice. So any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks

When I set mine up the port setting was given to me by the programme
as 5200 for POP3 and 5201 for SMTP. There is an entry 'Local Port -
used in e-mail client' which contained the number. I remember seeing
5110 mentioned somewhere but that did not work for me either.

What number SMTP have you got?

Having clicked on 'configure', how does your 'E-mail proxy servers
list read'?

Hello and thanks. I've got it to work temporarily. Your settings work
fine, actually it works fine for any port number (> 5000). My problem
is that it AVG e-mail scanner does not work properly with my Zone Alarm
software. I have not sorted this out yet. Thanks for all your help.
