How to *know* AV program is scanning email?

I have "junked" Norton AV, which shows a yellow envelope (opening and
closing) as it scans incoming e-mail.
I installed AVG and i see no indication that it is scanning e-mail.
In fact, i do not know what email "client" it is looking at, or how
to change that.
My OS has Outlook Express and Netscape; i use Netscape for e-mail and
have tried to ignore OE (cannot get rid of it).

Should i use something else which has better interface for that?

Some AV's that scan inbound emails like NOD32 will put an AV meessage in
the footer of the email showing that the email has been scanned by NOD32.
It does that on my Outlook email incoming. I'll assume some of the others
do something similiar. However, I don't know if NOD32 will do it with
Netscape.

Send email to the email account with the EICAR test file attached. Experiment with
EICAR.PIF, EICAR.COM, and EICAR.COM in a ZIP file.

Latest version http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5 pops
up a tiny box showing the action, plus you can specify stamping the email
which will show the operation performed incoming and outgoing. You can send
yourself an eicar if you like also.
