Do you get any error messages? What actually happens? Usually failures
to install an antivirus mean that the computer is already infected,
probably with a virus that breaks av programs. If you suspect this is
the case, first clean up the computer as follows:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

Now you can install your full-featured av, update its definitions, and
do a full system scan in Safe Mode. After you have removed all viruses,
continue your cleaning by removing other malware:

1) remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
(www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com). These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html. I would
not install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there
are CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_cwsremoval.html. A combination of
HijackThis and About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in
removing homepage hijackers. Always read the instructions before
running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to update these programs before
running, and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode.
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options);

2) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

3) make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update;

4) run a firewall.

No fix is necessary as it has been installed on hundreds of thousand
computers without any problem at all.

Why would you think it is Norton/Symantec. Why not think that you have
something on your computer that is blocking the install - like a virus! That
is why Norton lets you run a virus scan from the CD, prior to installing the
product. Try it. You may well be very surprised with what you find.

Hi
Have you removed all previous versions (if any) of NAV?
Sometimes remnants of older versions can hamper the install of later ones.

There are situations in which one doesn't have the NV CD at all. For
example, we can download a version of NAV from our university computer
store but we never get a CD. So if a student got a computer from
somewhere and wants to install his/her own NAV, you get a situation
similar to what the original author is in.

I buy on-line. You just expand the files to a temporary folder. Then run CD
Start from within the folder. You WILL have the opportunity to check for
virus's "before" trying to install the program.

NAV2004 *is* a virus.

:D

Somebody I know got a second hand computer (somebody else didn't need it
anymore) and it came with IIRC NAV 9.x (version is also IIRC). My friend
wanted to uninstall that version and install his own version of NAV that
he had bought. He uninstalled the earlier NV9.x but just couldn't
install his own. Apparently uninstallation of NAV9.x didn't fix all the
registry entries and wouldn't allow new installation of his own NV copy.

That one - AVG 6 - will cease to be supported at the end of this month,

only in a Beta version that will expire at 30 Nov
Alex, I have tried repeatedly to get that so-called year's free trial.
When I say repeatedly, I mean for a period of TWO WEEKS. It's a complete
no-go. And try to contact this group! Not a snowball's chance in hell.
They may be great but I'll never know since I cannot for the life of me
download their software. I recommend Trend Micro. They're offering a 90
day free trial and you can actually download it! ;-)

James,

You must be doing something strange. I just sent two friends and a relative
there and they got the program with no problem at all.

You need to provide them with your name and email address as they will send
you an email with your registration/license info. That email also includes the
link to DL the actual program.

EZAV is a great program, solid, dependable, and a great deal for free. I have
a "paid for" license and feel it is worth every penny.

Fred, trust me.... I've done everything you mentioned. I followed the
links provided in the email from CA and sure enough... the downloaded
cancelled out after a few minutes. I've DSL so it's not a huge download.
I've tried contacting them but as I mentioned, that is a complete waste
of time since it appears nigh to impossible to make contact. Like I
said, after two weeks of attempting this I finally threw in the towel
and downloaded and installed Trend Micro's PC-cillin. I'm glad you were
able (and apparently your friends as well) to download this program but
for me it was a complete exercise in futility.
