AVG AntiVirus or AVAST?

I am trying to decide to use either Grisoft's AVG AntiVirus (Free version) or
AVAST AntiVirus. Which of these two are better?

I had Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional on my system, but Symantec refuses
to reactivate it. I had a computer replaced (case/power supply, motherboard,
and UPS) due to a lightning strike and now I cannot reactivate or use Norton
AntiVirus 2004.

If you are talking about AVAST AntiVirus Professional, I would give you a
green light compare to AVG Free version of anti-virus.
The AVAST AntiVirus Professional includes one very good feature, which is
command line virus scanning and removing process feature.

Hope you can make a correct choice

I can't comment on the the AVAST antivirus from personal use, but it comes
highly recommended from various ISPs. I personally use the AVG av and its
pretty good, IMHO.

I am looking at the free versions of AVAST and AVG.

Paying for anti-virus software is like contributing to a conspiracy. If
Microsoft would make a decent operating system, all this security software
would not be needed.

If other products would exhibits these anomalies, there would be product
recalls and vendors/manufacturers would need to fix them. With software, it
an 'oh well' situation. Apple's Mac OS X and Linux are good alternatives,
but Linux is not ready for prime time. Mac OS X on the other hand is a great
OS and it would easily replace Windows if Apple would allow it to install on
existing x86 hardware.

well FWIF i recently had to repair a virus infected machine that had
Norton on it.
i updated Norton and ran a virus scan and it found and repaired *one* virus.
i then uninstalled norton and installed the free version of AVG...
AVG then found 7 or 8 more and deleted them...

Hey,

It's politically unwise for you to say this here. :)
We cannot get best of everything.

There will be both advantages and disadvantages for everything we have.
Whatever it is, MSFT has done quite well with its operation systems.

Well at least you got someone to answer you and you were able to say what was on your mind from the start

I've used both AVG and Avast and I prefer Avast. Both are nice tho ......
Avast updates automatically .....

I appreciate the feedback, responses, etc. on my questions, but I get
frustrated towards M$ because they are not correcting the virus, malware,
etc. problem. The malicous software and anti-virus software that Microsoft
is bringing out should not require a subscription nor the software itself.
Microsoft is demostrating that it can solve the problem through more
software. If they can do that, just fix the OS!

Personally i prefer the free version of AVG. Incientally AVG also updates
automatically it is only a question of scheduling the update to a time to
suit you. I have three operating system one running AVG the other Avast and
the thir (server) running Sophos. All do there job very well. Sophos, of
course, isn't free but either way AVG or Avast the choice is yours. They are
both extremely good. Aesthetically speaking AVG has the better interface.

A Microsoft rep in a local computer store recently got asked about the
numerous viruses, malware, etc. problems. The rep was not able to answer the
asked questions and provided hand gestures towards the Apple/Mac section of
the store. The Microsoft rep told the few customers that Apple's Mac OS X is
virus free and runs great. Two of the customers in the store bought a great
computer (Apple iMac G5 with Mac OS X) after the Microsoft rep's attitude and
indirection towards Apple.

Go ahead and buy that Mac.

I've used both. IMHO, Avast is much better as far as protection, but it's
interface is terrible till you get to learn it. In all the years I used AVG
it never picked up a single virus. Also AVG's virus updates take much longer
than Avast's which only download the changes. Important if you have dialup
like I do.

No antivirus will find all the virii but it is apparently not wise to run
two simultaneously. I now use Avast4 for runtime protection and every now
and then run a scan with Ewido as a second check. Don't run them together.

You also need Spyware protection.

Both AVG and Avast are great firewalls. I used AVG until they had some
updating problems and decided to try Avast. Now I prefer Avast. A little
slicker and it updates every four hours. Has voice announcements and just a
little popup in the corner when it updates or finds a virus. Try both and
decide.

Personally i prefer the free version of AVG. Incientally AVG also updates
automatically it is only a question of scheduling the update to a time to
suit you.

There's a check box "If Internet connection is not available, check
when it goes on line" I can't remember whether it's checked by
default but if not then everyone should check it manually.

I find the updates go so fast that I hardly notice them -- and
unlike some other software *cough* *Symantec* it doesn't steal focus
while I'm working in another window. I'm on broadband, so YMMV.
