Non-Genuine to Genuine

My computer ran into some trouble recently and for some reason the hard drive
just formatted itself??

I was doing some really important coursework at the time so a friend gave me
a windows xp professional disc, which is non-genuine.

I do however have a genuine Windows XP Home Edition key.

I found a tool on the Microsoft Genuine site that changes the key to another
key, in this case I want to change the key I have now (the non genuine) to a
genuine key, on the underneath of my laptop.

However, it has Windows XP Pro on it, but the Key is for Home Edition.
Will the key be able to change it succesful?

The only way to return to Windows XP Home Edition is
to reformat your hard drive and reinstall your genuine
version of Windows XP Home Edition.

I can assure that it did *not* do that. Hard drives do not
just format themselves.

No. And there is no way to downgrade from XP Professional to Home. You
need to install XP Home cleanly.

Sounds like malware, trogen or virus.

No. Pro and Home have different keys.
