No Web thru AOL...IE pops up and says action canceled

New computer. First signed up for Earthlink and found all
access #'s were long distance. Then signed up for AOL and
I get in through my modem ok, but when I try to go to the
www or anyother web page, IE pops up and says "action
canceled". Tried the autofix in AOL, etc., changing
settings, called for tech support, still not fixed. I
have XP Professional. I'm stumped. I removed earthlink
from my desktop thinking it was causing the problem
because it was set up as my default settings. I also
reloaded AOL software...still same problem. I'm thinking
it's something in the settings for Internet Explorer?
