Just in case anybody else runs into this...
Last night (1 Aug 04) I let my tablet download the latest Windows
Update. I wasn't paying much attention, but it was only one new item.
When it restarted, my desktop wallpaper was gone. I went to the
Display control panel and noticed that all the .bmp patterns worked,
but none of the .jpg images would load. I also noticed that selecting
thumbnail view to see what all the choices actually look like showed
only icons, not thumbnails. Then I noticed that Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer was unavailable.
After a bit of searching, I found the fix - the picture and fax viewer
had somehow come unregistered. Typing "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" in a
command window (or at Start -> Run) made everything work again.
I saw one suggestion that there is a known bug in the update - add my
vote to this theory... So how do they get "shimgvw" from "Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer"?
