no system icon in control panel

My AVG anti-virus said I had a java-byte-verify virus. One suggested "fix"
for this was to clear the Java cache & another was to clear restore points.
I have done both without success. The third was to turn on and off system
restore to eliminate all restore points. I was going to attempt this but
have no "system icon" in my control panel. Is there an easy way to restore
the "system icon" without restoring (which I can't do) or reinstalling
windows xp & sp2 in their entirety?. I have only the most recent restore
point which was definitely missing the "system icon." I have not used it in
a lolng while so my system icon may have been missing for a long time.

First off, when you open Control Panel, look for an item on the
left that says "Switch to Classic view". If you're already using
Classic view and still do not see the System icon then you might
want to try the following.

1. Right click the My Computer icon on your desktop. Select
Properties.
2. Right click the My Computer entry on your Start menu. Select
Properties.
3. Go to Start -> Run. In the "Open" box type sysdm.cpl. Hit OK.

From there you can select the System Restore tab and turn off
System Restore.

Thanks for your prompt response trying to help! Unfortunately - it's a
bigger problem. I was using classic view. I followed your advice (or tried
to) right click on properties. As soon as I do, a "rund1132.exe - Bad image"
error notice pops up and says "The application or DLL
C:\WINNT\system32\usp10.dll is not a valid winodws image. Please check this
against your installation diskette."

Can you offer any further advice to spare me the painful process of
reinstalling windows from scratch? Thanks!

Sorry to hear that didn't help. It sounds as if you've got more
than a few problems. Before you start from scratch you might want
to try running a Repair Installation as documented here:

It's worked for me a few times. Personally, I'd start from
scratch even if you were able to get your current installation
repaired. I've found that many times you're just delaying the
inevitable. If you've got recent backups of your files then you
might want to consider it.
