No Start Menu and/or task Bar

Our Flat Screen blew a fuse, so we've had to plug in our old monitor. In
doing this, we've lost vision of the start/task bar - Every thing that we
have tried has not worked - any idea on how we get it back?

Try tapping the F8 key on start up,select safe mode, enter as administrator,
open device mgr, uninstall the old monitor if its still present, close device
mgr.
You can usually restore xp if on a user account by,pressing:Ctrl_Alt_Delete
@ same time,this opens task mgr,new task,type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C:

I'm not the most computer literate person, however, we've tried:
Andrew's suggestions (see his comments) with no luck - the old screen
appears not to be installed now.
Basically we've been playing with the display properties of the desktop to
see if that made any difference and it hasn't. Not sure what to try next

Andrew E. is an idiot who is well-known for posting ridiculous garbage
on these newsgroups.

1. In the Display applet>Settings tab set your resolution to 1024 x 768
if you have a 17" monitor. If the old monitor is a 15" one, use 800 x
600.

2. Use the buttons on the monitor itself to reduce the screen size.

You say old monitor. Try the manual adjust buttons on the monitor to
make the screen vertical size smaller, or move it up to see the
bottom/lower edge of the desktop.

Thanks Malke - just tried that on your advice, and no good. Adjusting the
buttons on the actual monitor don't work either. Our Flat screen was a 17"
and the old one (the one I am using now) is a 15" I tried both of your
suggestions and neither made any difference.

Hi John,

This generally has to do with display drivers. If you have recently updated
them or ran the MS updates to do so, try a rollback via the Device Manager.
Create a system restore point first. If this is not the case, use
Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end process on Explorer.exe if it is listed and either
way, then go to File/New Task (Run) and type in: Explorer.exe.

Other options/suggestions:

Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this
is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These
scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.
