no sound

for some un-apparent reason the sound stopped working on
my laptop
I noticed no speaker icon in the system tray and when I
tried turning it on through the control panel, my audio
driver wasn't listed (although it shows up in the hardware
devices list)
I re-installed the audio driver and it worked until I re-
booted and it disappeared again, no speaker in the sys
tray and no audio driver listed under Control Panel/Sound,
it says that there is no sound device installed

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
